The questions provided on the Research page on this website are helpful in preparing your for conference and getting you started on your paper, but your paper does not necessarily have to include all of that information. Instead, the guidelines on what a successful Position Paper should include below are more specific and focused.

Position Papers are the launching point of conference. A good paper will give more background on the issue and propose solutions, and as such will help get the conversation started in the opening sessions. The solutions proposed in your Position Paper are the preliminary ideas that, during committee sessions, you should work to have ultimately included in a Resolution.

Getting Started Before getting started on your Position Paper, you will need to know your country, your committee, and the topic that you are writing about. After you choose your topic, make sure you have read the Background Guide provided by your committee.

To be eligible for an award, a delegate must write two Position Papers, one for each of the topics. To submit your paper, email it to cs houstonareamun. Please steer away from giving a history of your country and listing facts about your country, unless you can explain why that history or those facts are relevant to the committee's topics.

I read as much as I could find about Yugoslavia, in Wikipedia, military analysis websites, historical books, and then I made sure I understood what was going on in the rest of the world. The crisis program included lecture sessions and discussions about crisis strategies. It helped me understand that doing crisis well means not just imagination, but imagination applied to detailed plans.

During the program, we simulated both prepared for daily crisis committees and an ad hoc midnight crisis. I learned that no matter how much you know about a situation, having long-term plans is the best way to come out on top. I asked for help on how I could do well in committee. So I built crisis arcs based on the position and my research: building grassroots peasant support for my cause, ensuring the support of the Allies, gaining an intelligence advantage over the enemy in committee.

One thing to remember was not to over-develop in-depth plans because the situation in crisis committees changes so quickly. I made sure to find the details which I knew would be important no matter what happened: my crisis binder included the names of world leaders, lists of alliances, military base locations, and equipment lists.

Finally, I was really grateful for the section of my binder on different types of maps: political, geographic, and military.
